Plate earthing is still specified in many drawings and works well in soil with consistent moisture. Pipe and rod earthing generally reaches deeper, more stable soil layers and takes less excavation, which is why most new installations use it.
3 mm suits general installations. 6 mm is used where the plate must carry higher fault current or where soil conditions are corrosive and the extra metal extends life.
