In sandy, dry or rocky soil it is what keeps resistance low and stable through the year. In consistently moist black soil an electrode can perform acceptably without it, but compound still reduces seasonal variation.
As a working figure, allow two bags of 25 kg for a standard 3 metre pit in normal soil, and more where the soil is dry or rocky. We can work out the quantity for your pit count if you send the site details.
Salt and charcoal lower resistance initially but leach away and corrode the electrode over time, so the pit needs re-doing. A stable ground enhancement compound holds its performance without attacking the electrode.
